What is Counselling?

“Counselling is for anyone who wants help at any time, who is unhappy with his or her present circumstances and hopes for change, or who wishes to make progress in personal development. Counselling is valuable as an aid to personal growth, can help to develop assertiveness and self-confidence, and improve your sense of well being. It is of particular relevance in times of crisis or transition, and can also be a help in problem-solving.”

(From the “Guide to Counselling and Therapy”, by the Irish Association for Counselling and Therapy, Wolfhound, 1991).

Essentially, the work of Counselling and Psychotherapy is about exploring how we live our lives. It is about considering our current thinking and behaviour patterns and working towards new ways of addressing life.  Most importantly, it is about doing that within a supportive environment.

..... and what of Psychotherapy?

There is quite a bit of cross-over between counselling and psychotherapy. However, psychotherapy is seen as a deeper way of working with issues - more of a re-working of old, well-learned habits, patterns and reactions to situations. While it can take longer, the resultant changes are, also, usually more long-term.
