Where
does "Coolranny" name come from?
"Coolranny"
is the
name of a field, which is part of a farm where
cattle and sheep are
reared.
Several generations of farmers on this farm (my ancestors),
have
noticed
that the animals seem to spend a lot of time in
this particular field,
in preference to the fields around it.
There's nothing that seems that special about the field.
Nobody even seems to know what the name means.
"It's Irish in itself" a local once said.
The Coolranny faces the north.
The hill, rising behind it, shelters it from some of the prevailing
south-westerly winds.
The field below it, is a little wet, a bit boggy.
The soil under
the Coolranny, however, is a little sandy. It's always
dry.
There's a stream runs at the bottom of the field.
Fresh, gurgling,
crystal clear water, that has risen from the hill
behind.
Whenever I see the animals in the field, they seem so contented.
Safe. Comfortable. Nurtured.
That's the Coolranny. [ click
